It wasn't long ago that a hardy group of volunteers gathered at the garden to remove the rocks and amend the soil filled with clay. Who would have thought that The Lord's Acre of Fletcher, our garden, would be producing over 200 pounds of vegetables each week and over 1500 pounds of produce this season! Squash are harvested just about every other day, along with green peppers, tomatoes, cucumbers, and my personal favorite, perpetual spinach. Two hives of bees are buzzing about ensuring our 150 watermelon plants grow over the next month. Did I mention the blueberry bushes and Michael's Eagle Scout Project, The Pollinator Garden?! It's worth a drive by to catch a glimpse of the garden and a look in the hoop house to fully appreciate "The Lord's Acre."
SNIFF...Yes, that was Chef Martha on Saturday preparing a hardy potato pancake for our neighbors. She used three items from the pantry: potato flakes, dry milk, and pancake mix. Each neighbor was offered a tasty pancake topped with syrup. 117 neighbors representing 392 individuals enjoyed observing this food demonstration. We welcomed 10 new families averaging four per household.
On behalf of the Executive Committee, thank you to our volunteers and our area churches, civic groups, local merchants, and families for all you do to feed our community helping to reduce food insecurity. We thank you and appreciate your food and monetary donations.
For The Executive Committee,
Kathy Noyes
