After two years of virtual walks for the Hunger Coalition Walk, Joyce Jolly, president of the Hunger Coalition of Henderson County, shared with local agencies who distribute food in Henderson County how excited it was to be back in Jackson Park for the Hunger Walk 2022! This is the 40 th year for this event that raises money to assist local agencies in providing food for those who need it! This past Sunday on the campus of the Arden Woods Retirement Community, the Arden Woods Walkers along with Callie and Joyce walked around their campus to support this fund raiser that helps to reduce food insecurity throughout our community. All funds are donated to food pantries and Calvary Episcopal Church Food Pantry has been the recipient of a portion of these funds over the past several years thanks to the grants written by Carol Romine and Pat Jollie. We will have representatives on September 17 at Jackson Park distributing literature about our pantry.
As the rain was pouring down heavily at the pantry on Saturday, that did not deter the several students volunteering from TC Roberson High School to assist with carryout. Talk about a two umbrella day... there were ponchos galore and other rain gear as our carry out folks not only pushed the carts through the soaking rain but also offered our neighbors a "sugar baby watermelon grown in the Lord's Acre of Fletcher, our garden. The first 60 watermelons were harvested last Thursday night. 92 neighbors shopped on Saturday representing 320 individuals and six new families..
Donations this week were boxes of Spring lettuce grown at Bright Farms in Etowah. St . Andrews gleaners donated green peppers, tomatoes, and potatoes. The Rotary Club donated a pickup truck full of corn and MilkCo provided several boxes of milk. Flavor-First donated corn and tomatoes. Ingles contributed buns and rolls. Bread, and doughnuts were donated by a patron. Tractor.Food and Farms delivered basil, raspberries, sweet peppers, mushrooms, lettuce mix, ginger, collards, broccoli, potatoes, apples and eggplant. Shopping locally the Pantry purchased milk.
Announcement: The UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy interns will be here on Saturday checking blood pressures and blood glucose screenings.
On behalf of the executive committee, thank you to our volunteers and our area churches, civic groups, local merchants, and families for all you do to feed our community.
