As part of the Salt and Light Project at VERITAS Christian Academy, their third-grade classrooms choose us to be the recipients of their outreach program. Students collected over a hundred pounds of diapers to donate to the Pantry. They spent time decorating note cards with fall pictures and special messages to be given to our neighbors on Saturday. Two volunteers from the Pantry shared with the students about the importance of the Pantry and how we are helping to reduce food insecurity in the community.
Chef Martha's skillet was sizzling as she prepared a yummy black bean and salsa burrito for the neighbors to sample. She selects items available in the Pantry and offers a taste and a recipe. A record number of neighbors attended this Saturday since the opening of the Center of Hope. We welcomed 116 households representing 402 individuals and greeted eight new families.
We received many generous donations of time and talent this week. Several quilts were hung in the gathering room quilted by Georgiana Shorman and Diana Walgreen. The St. Andrews Gleaners brought in yummy eggplant, a monetary contribution from The Tabernacle of Prayer, food items from Lutheran Church of the Nativity, Calvary Episcopal Church, and Fletcher First Baptist Church. Volunteers from Fletcher Methodist assisted with MANNA delivery. Individuals picked up the milk from MilCo, items from Savor-Mor, Ingles, Bimbos, Dollar General, and City Bakery. Shopping locally, we purchased items from Ingles (canned goods and meat), Sav-Mor (milk and eggs), MANNA, and JMJ Tomato Company (potatoes, onions, squash)
On behalf of the executive committee, thank you to our volunteers and our area churches, civic groups, local merchants, and families for all you do to feed our community helping to reduce food insecurity.
