Christian Formation in the Season of Epiphany
As we turn the corner from 2020 to 2021, we also move from the Christmas liturgical season to the Epiphany, beginning January 6th.
We have an exciting line-up of lessons for our Godly Play (K-2nd graders) and Rotations (3rd-5th graders) programs during this time. We will be telling the stories of three parables for our youngest in the Godly Play program. Thank you in advance to Candice Ficker and Callie Otten for making the storytelling materials for the parable of the Good Shepherd, and the parable of the Good Samaritan, respectively.
As you know parables are stories Jesus told to convey a spiritual lesson for the very real situations that challenge and inform our faith. They were also meant to be engaging, and to invite conversation and debate among the listeners. I hope you will join your children in watching the parables videos as scheduled below on the color coded chart. We will also memorize Psalm 23 during this series.
In Rotations, we will be offering a musical presented in three scenes over as many weeks called Peace in the Kingdom. Based on the famous painting by Edward Hicks entitled ‘The Peaceable Kingdom’ (1834), which is based on Isaiah 11:6.
“The wolf will live with the lamb,
the leopard will lie down with the goat,
the calf and the lion and the yearling together;
and a little child will lead them.”
While this will be a fun and entertaining musical presented by the characters depicted in the painting, it is also a richly woven story about how the Christ Child will become the One who brings peace to all nations. Parents can talk to their children about how our faith can make a difference in the lives of the most vulnerable in our communities and world today, modeled after Jesus’ example.
Once again, we cannot wait until we meet again, in person with you! However, the next best thing is the virtual world, and please note: we are also happy to do a Zoom follow up to discuss the themes presented in any lesson. Just let us know! (nwoodworth@calvaryfletcher.org).
Epiphany Blessings to all! Love in Christ, Mother Nan
